Fit Experience hosts 3rd Annual Health Fair

The Fit Experience, 540 Lafayette Road, will host its third annual fall health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Sparta police will be on hand to check infant/child seats, and Amber Alert representatives will discuss their program for finding lost children. There also will be a blood bank, vendors and exercise classes.

At 12:30 p.m., entries to the Harvest Dessert Contest will be judged. Entries must be received by noon. Contestants should bring the recipe. The winner will receive a three- month membership to the gym.

Weight loss episode marks second reality show appearance for woman

Sparta - A posting on Reality Wanted brought about a life-changing experience and a loss of 8.3 inches for Teresa Sellinger, a stay-at-home mother and writer from Sparta.

Sellinger had enrolled on the reality-show-casting Web site following an appearance on Dear Genevieve where the HGTV home designer guru Genevieve Gorder redid some of the Sellinger home.

Expressing an interest in weight loss topics on her profile, Sellinger was contacted by the producers of The Tyra Banks Show. After the interview process, she was one of five women chosen for the NIVEA My Silhouette! - My Skinny Jeans Challenge.

As part of the challenge, Sellinger and the other contenders were required to reach into the back of their closets for those hidden archetypal “skinny” jeans reserved for a future weight loss goal.

Sparta girls raise money for humane societies

Sparta — Two animal-loving Sparta girls have decided to raise money for Associated Humane Societies (AHS).

Sally Roscoe and Hannah Bellamy, both 12 and students a the Sparta Middle School, have started selling bracelets and will be donating all the profits to AHS.

They did very well at the Middle School Trunk Sale held recently and are currently looking for more selling opportunities.

Matt Querns

Kick-off party is this Sunday

SPARTA — Matt Querns recently joined Sparta United Methodist Church as its new youth ministry director.

“I look forward to journeying forward with the young people here as I share a bit of what I know and as I learn a lot of what they have to offer,” said Querns.

Querns is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where he focused on youth ministry and Christian history. He received his undergraduate degree from Hanover College, taught English and French in China; taught fourth grade in North Carolina; and interned in two churches in Tucson.

Three youth groups are planned for this fall.

The United Methodist Youth Fellowship (grades nine to 12) will meet twice a month. High school events will include an Ocean City Youth Weekend in the fall and a variety of activities with other church youth groups at the district and conference level.

The Junior Youth Fellowship (grades six to eight) will be meeting twice a month and are invited to participate in confirmation.

The Intermediate Youth Fellowship (grades four and five) will meet once a month.

A kick-off pool party for the three youth groups is planned for this Sunday, Aug. 30 at Aldersgate Center.

Querns will be preach at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services at the church.
